जगन्नाथपुरी — योग से ही भगवत् पाद आदि शंकराचार्य ने भारतवर्ष में चार पीठों की स्थापना की। ईसा से 507 वर्ष पहले भारत में आदि शंकराचार्य का आविर्भाव (जन्म) हुआ था। वस्तु स्थिति यह है कि हमारे सामने अकाट्य प्रमाण है, जिसके सामने सारे तर्क निष्फल हैं, कि जब आदि शंकराचार्य का आविर्भाव भारत में हुआ था तब इस्लाम और ईसाई दोनों पंथ और मत का कोई अस्तित्व नहीं था। आज धरती पर जो भी भू-भाग है, वो उस समय सनातन संस्कृति से आच्छादित हो चुका था। पूरे विश्व की राजधानी भारत को स्थापित करते हुये आदि शंकराचार्य ने चारधाम पीठों की स्थापना की।उन्होंने भले ही भारत के चार कोनों में शंकराचार्य पीठों की स्थापना की हो लेकिन सनातन धर्म के शासन का क्षेत्र पूरे विश्व को ही माना। बौद्ध सम्राट सुधन्वा जो कि युधिष्ठिर की वंश परंपरा के थे, बौद्ध पंडितों और भिक्षुकों के संपर्क में आकर वे बौद्ध सम्राट के रुप में ख्याति प्राप्त होकर वे शासन कर रहे थे। सनातन वैदिक आर्य हिंदु धर्म का दमन कर रहे थे तब आदि शंकराचार्य ने उनके हृदय को शुद्ध किया और सार्वभौमिक सनातन हिंदु धर्म मूर्ति के रूप में उन्हें फिर प्रतिष्ठित किया। उन्हें पथभ्रष्ट होने और अन्य राजाओं पर भी शासन करने के लिये आदि शंकराचार्य ने चार दिशाओं पूर्व, पश्चिम, उत्तर और दक्षिण में चार धाम पीठों की स्थापना की। इसमें से पूर्व और पश्चिम की जो पीठें हैं वे समुद्र के तट पर हैं।भौगोलिक दृष्टि से भगवान शंकराचार्य ने बद्रीनाथ में ज्योतिर्मठ की स्थापना की जो पर्वत माला के बीच में है।
रामेश्वर के श्रंगेरी क्षेत्र जो इस समय कर्नाटक में है, वहां उन्होंने मठ की स्थापना की। उत्तर-दक्षिण के मठ पर्वत माला के बीच हैं और पूर्व-पश्चिम के मठ समुद्र किनारे। चारों वेद और छह प्रकार के शास्त्र या कह सकते हैं 32 प्रकार की विद्याओं के प्रभेद और 32 कलाओं के प्रभेद, सबके सब सुरक्षित रहें, इसलिए एक-एक वेद से संबद्ध करके एक-एक शंकराचार्य पीठ की स्थापना की। जैसे ऋग्वेद से गोवर्धन पुरी मठ (जगन्नाथ पुरी), यजुर्वेद से श्रृंगेरी (रामेश्वरम्), सामवेद से शारदा मठ (द्वारिका) और अथर्ववेद से संबध्द ज्योतिर्मठ (बद्रीनाथ) है। ब्रह्मा के चार मुख हैं, पूर्व के मुख से ऋग्वेद. दक्षिण से यजुर्वेद की, पश्चिम से सामवेद और उत्तर से अथर्ववेद की उत्पत्ति हुई है। इसी आधार पर शंकराचार्य ने चार पीठों की स्थापना की और उनको चार वेदों से जोड़ा है।सन्यासी अखाड़े और परंपरा तो भारत में पहले भी थी, लेकिन आदि शंकराचार्य ने इन दशनामी संन्यासी अखाड़ों को भौगोलिक आधार पर विभाजित किया। दशनामी अखाड़े जिनमें सन्यासियों के नाम के पीछे लगने वाले शब्द से उनकी पहचान होती है। वन, अरण्य, पुरी, भारती, सरस्वती, गिरि, पर्वत, तीर्थ, सागर और आश्रम, ये दशनामी अखाड़ों के संन्यासियों के दस प्रकार हैं। आदि शंकराचार्य ने इनके नाम के मुताबिक ही इन्हें अलग-अलग दायित्व सौंपे। जैसे, वन और अरण्य नाम के संन्यासियों को, जो पुरी पीठ से संबद्ध है, इन्हें आदि शंकराचार्य ने ये दायित्व दिया कि हमारे वन (बड़े जंगल) और अरण्य (छोटे जंगल) सुरक्षित रहें, वनवासी भी सुरक्षित रहें, इनमें विधर्मियों की दाल ना गले। पुरी, भारती और सरस्वती ये श्रृंगेरी मठ से जुड़े हैं, सरस्वती सन्यासियों का दायित्व है हमारे प्राचीन उच्च कोटि के शिक्षा केंद्र, अध्ययन केंद्र सुरक्षित रहें, इनमें अध्यात्म और धर्म की शिक्षा होती रहे। भारती सन्यासियों का दायित्व ये है कि मध्यम कोटि के शिक्षा केंद्र सुरक्षित रहें, यहां विधर्मियों का आतंक ना हो। पुरी सन्यासियों का दायित्व तय किया कि हमारी प्राचीन आठ पुरियों जैसे अयोध्या, मथुरा और जगन्नाथपुरी आदि सुरक्षित रहें। तीर्थ और आश्रम नाम के संन्यासी जो द्वारिका मठ से सम्बद्ध हैं, तीर्थ सन्यासियों का दायित्व तीर्थों को सुरक्षित रखना और आश्रम सन्यासियों का काम हमारे प्राचीन आश्रमों की रक्षा करना था। कुछ सालों पहले समुद्र के रास्ते से कुछ आतंकियों ने भारत वर्ष में घुसकर आतंक मचाया था। ये आदि शंकराचार्य की दूरदर्शिता ही थी कि उन्होंने ज्योतिर्मठ (बद्रीनाथ) से सम्बद्ध सागर सन्यासियों को समुद्र सीमाओं की रक्षा का दायित्व दिया था। सेतु समुद्रम के कारण हमें ईंधन प्राप्त हो रहा है, इसी से समुद्र का संतुलन है, राम सेतु के टूटने से रामेश्वर का ज्योतिर्लिंग भी डूब जाएगा।
यूपीए सरकार के समय इसे तोड़ने के प्रस्ताव भी बन रहे थे। संतों ने आगे आकर इसे रोका। आदि शंकराचार्य की दूरदर्शिता थी कि उन्होंने सैंकड़ों साल पहले ही सागर नाम के संन्यासियों को समुद्र की रक्षा के लिए तैनात कर दिया था। गिरि और पर्वत नाम के सन्यासियों को पहाड़, वहां के निवासी, औषधि, प्राकृतिक संसाधनों की रक्षा के लिए नियुक्त किया। ये भी ज्योतिर्मठ से संबद्ध हैं। इस तरह दस तरह के संन्यासियों को उनके दायित्व सौंप दिये। अगर ये दशनामी संन्यासी अपने दायित्यों को ठीक से समझते और चारों शंकराचार्य इनका ठीक से नेतृत्व करते तो आज भारत की ये दुर्दशा नहीं होती। धर्मराज्य की पुनर्स्थापना और सम्राट सुधन्वा की स्थापना के बाद आदि शंकराचार्य ने भारतीय सनातन ग्रंथों को क्रमबद्ध किया। बौद्ध धर्म में जिन ग्रंथों को दूषित कर दिया गया था, उन सबको फिर से अपनी व्याख्याओं से शुद्ध किया। ब्रह्मसूत्र आदि की व्याख्या से सूत्र विज्ञान को विकसित किया।
