नई दिल्ली – नेशनल वार मेमोरियल में बलिदानी सैनिकों को श्रद्धांजलि देने और तीनों सेनाओं के संयुक्त गार्ड ऑफ ऑनर के बाद देश के नवनियुक्त और दूसरे प्रमुख रक्षा अध्यक्ष (सीडीएस – चीफ आफ डिफेंस स्टाफ) लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल रिटायर्ड अनिल चौहान (61 वर्षीय) ने आज पदभार सम्हाल लिया है। वे जनरल बिपिन रावत की जगह देश के दूसरे सीडीएस बने हैं। तमिलनाडु में हेलीकॉप्टर दुर्घटना में भारत के पहले सीडीएस जनरल बिपिन रावत के निधन के नौ महीने से ज्यादा समय बाद लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल (रिटायर्ड) अनिल चौहान ने वरिष्ठतम सैन्य कमांडर का दायित्व ग्रहण किया है। केन्द्र सरकार ने बुधवार को उन्हें नया सीडीएस मनोनीत किया था। वे रक्षा मंत्रालय के सैन्य मामलों के विभाग के सचिव के तौर पर भी काम करेंगे। पदभार ग्रहण करने से पहले उन्होंने अपने पिता सुरेन्द्र सिंह चौहान के साथ दिल्ली स्थित वॉर मेमोरियल और अमर जवान ज्योति पहुंचकर शहीदों को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित कर नमन किया। उन्हें रायसीना हिल्स में साउथ ब्लॉक के लॉन पर तीनों सशस्त्र सेनाओं की ओर से गार्ड ऑफ ऑनर दिया गया।
इस अवसर पर थलसेनाध्यक्ष जनरल मनोज पांडेय, वायुसेनाध्यक्ष एयर चीफ मार्शल विवेक राम चौधरी और नौसेना के उप प्रमुख वाईस एडमिरल एस. एन. घोरमाडे सहित नये सीडीएस चौहान की पत्नी अनुपमा भी उनके साथ थीं। लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल रिटायर्ड चौहान देश के पहले तीन सितारा सैन्य अधिकारी (ले. जनरल) हैं, जिन्हें चार सितारा यानि जनरल बनाकर इतने अहम पद पर नियुक्त किया गया है। नये चीफ आफ डिफेंस स्टाफ बतौर अनिल चौहान तीनों सेनाओं के बीच तालमेल पर ध्यान केंद्रित करेंगे। उनके सामने सशस्त्र सेनाओं के तीनों अंगों के बीच समन्वय और महत्वाकांक्षी ‘थियेटर’ कमान के निर्माण का लक्ष्य है ताकि देश की सेनाओं को भविष्य की सुरक्षा चुनौतियों से निपटने के लिये तैयार किया जा सके। जनरल चौहान को चीन मामलों का विशेषज्ञ माना जाता है और शीर्ष पद पर उनकी नियुक्ति ऐसे समय हुई है जब पूर्वी लद्दाख में भारतीय और चीनी सैनिकों के बीच सीमा को लेकर विवाद बना हुआ है। पदभार ग्रहण करने के बाद मीडिया से बातचीत में सीडीएस जनरल चौहान ने कहा – भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों में सर्वोच्च रैंक की जिम्मेदारी संभालने पर गर्व है। मैं चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ के रूप में तीनों सेना की अपेक्षाओं को पूरा करने का प्रयास करूंगा। हम सभी हमारे सामने सुरक्षा संबंधी जो भी चुनौतियां और मुश्किलें हैं उसको साझा रूप से दूर करने की कोशिश करेंगे।
