रामबांस को हम मालवा वासी रामबाण कहते हैं,, वही कुछ लोग इसे खेतकी भी कहते हैं,, एक समय था जब रामबांस के पत्तो से गेंहू के पुले बांधे जाते थे,पर कुछ वर्षों में ऐसी स्थिति बदली की रामबांस देखने को भी नही मिलता….
पुराने समय मे पशुओं और जंगली जानवरों से सुरक्षा एवं भूमि के कटाव को रोकने हेतु खेत की मेड़ों पर रामबांस लगाया जाता था सम्भवतः इसी कारण ईसे खेतकी भी कहा गया है…..अब उद्यानों में इसे शोभाकारी पौधे के रूप में भी लगाने लगे है….।।।
चाहे इसका उपयोग हमने आज बन्द कर दिया पर इसकी उपयोगिता अब भी महत्वपूर्ण हैं… रामबांस प्राकृतिक रेशा प्रदान करने वाली फसल के रूप में उभर रही है… इसकी पत्तियों से उच्च गुणवत्ता युक्त मजबूत और चमकीला प्राकृतिक रेशा प्राप्त होता है….विश्व में रेशा प्रदान करने वाली प्रमुख फसलों में सिसल का छटवाँ स्थान है और पौध रेशा उत्पादन में दो प्रतिशत की हिस्सेदारी है….
हमारे देश मे उड़ीसा, छत्तीसगढ़, मध्य प्रदेश, आन्ध्रप्रदेश,कर्नाटक, महाराष्ट्र्, बिहार और भी अन्य राज्यों में इसे देखा जा सकता है वही कईँ जगह अब इसकी व्यवसायिक खेती भी होने लगी है।
इसका रेशा मजबूत सफ़ेद और चमकीला होता है…इसका उपयोग समुद्री जहाज के लंगर का रस्सा और औद्योगिक कल-कारखानों में भी होता है। इसके अलावा चटाई, चारपाई बुनाई की रस्सी और घरेलू उपयोग में प्रयोग किया जाता है….रामबांस का रेशा उत्कृष्ट किस्म के कागज बनाने में भी उपयोग किया जाता है…..वर्तमान में इसका अनेक प्रकार की वस्तुएं बनाने में उपयोग किया जा रहा है…..जैसे कि फिशिंग नेट, कुशन, ब्रश, स्ट्रेप चप्पल और फैंसी सामग्री के रूप में लेडीज बैंग, कालीन, बेल्ट, फ्लोर कवर, वाल कवर इत्यादि के अलावा घर को सजाने के लिए विभिनन प्रकार की सजावट कीवस्तुएं बनायी जा रही हैं। रामबांस का रेशा निकलने के बाद शेष कचरे में हेकोजेनीन पाया जाता है,,जिसका कारटीजोन हार्मोन बनाने में उपयोग किया जाता है….वही इसके कचरे से उत्तम जैविक खाद का निर्माण किया जा सकता है….
